Journal

Back online !!!!

Moira Schneider

A big thank you to all of you that have been following my blog/journal. I have had a lot of fun doing it as we journeyed together on this amazing journey & then as Tony came home I was able to continue on my own journey. I am only sorry that this end part of the journey, Internet became a bit unreliable for me to continue posting. All good now though & I will finish blogging my journey over the next few days .....

After the big events I had a day to reorganise my packing, get my hire car back & get organised for my trip to Hungary with Maud .... On the Tuesday before I left I went into Camden Town where I hadn't been for something like 18 years. It was a fun few hours. Amazingly after I had flown home I saw that there had been a fire where I had walked ... quite sad as there were major renovations going on throughout the whole area  including  along the canal banks.

I got off at Covent Gardens & sat in the outdoor theatre area of St Paul's Church where 'McBeth' was being played in the summer evenings. Some  workers were enjoying having lunch in the quietness of these surroundings.

Friday to Sunday - Salvo Fair at Henley-on-Thames

Moira Schneider

Maud has done this fair for a number of years & knows a number of the stall holders & Thornton Kay the Events Manager. There is also Matt who keeps everything together on the setting up & opening days, who rides around on a quad bike sporting a black top hat!! This is a huge event & not just huge in terms of the number of exhibitors but also the nature of the business of the exhibitors. It includes reclamation products, large garden statues, large & heavy furniture. Many use cranes to lift products off trucks, hired to bring the things to the event. In addition to this, some exhibitors drive down in vans or caravans in which  they sleep over, while others stay locally in the surrounding B&B's & Pubs.   With what is available you could redo your garden - to look totally French or Italian. Along with these are exhibits like ours that have soft furnishings & lighting etc.   We are grateful that the weather holds out & we have a heavy duty marquee to work from....

The days are long but everyone is supportive of each other. Wednesday is a Trade day, with Saturday and Sunday being open. It is quite buzzy & people from all walks of life, from trendy Battersea to the almost Bohemian ...along with such a range of dogs. As the fair is on a farming property belonging to Lord & Lady McAlpine, their 3 dogs are continually running around mixing with the other dogs.  Imagine a large Golden Labrador (called Boris) with 2 English Pugs, one Black & one white. They were quite the life of the party.  The McAlpines are eclectic collectors & have a Train from Wales that is fully operational, taking children & adults for a half mile ride. Also alongside the train is a full sized Carousel.  There is an old blue Citroen van painted up, while a couple from Henley-on-Thames served coffees.

All in all it was a fun 3 days of meeting lots of new people: both the exhibiting stall holders & all the customers looking for that special something.

Tuesday's Adventure to Ardingly with Maud, then on to Salisbury for a Painting Lesson ...

Moira Schneider

This part of my time in  London sees me off to the 'Antiques & Architectural Fair' in the  South of England.   I was up at 4am to be there at 6am to meet Maud. We hadn't seen each other for 3 years. We agreed to meet in the 'Gardeners Arms Pub' which is opposite the event venue.  Along came Maud, full of life in her large well known Blue Van as her business is called 'Beyond France'.  Maud was as vivacious as ever & embraced me & was clearly excited about what would unfold. She had left enough room in the back of the van for me to load my boxes in ... along with the large bag of cushion inserts she had got for me. Off we trundled into the Antiques & Collectors Fair.  We drove to our site & began to set up. Maud had lots of trestle tables & props - it felt like an endless stream of goodies out of her van .... with constant interruptions from many walking past who knew her ...

It was an amazing day despite the incredible heat - it truly was over the top & people were sweltering & especially the ones who were out in the open & no shelter of trees !!! We shared a heavy duty marque with two others. One was a couple with anything vintage .. the other French man was so nice & had very old oil paintings.

We had quite a few customers.  One of mine was a delightful couple who had a design studio (Susie Atkinson Design UK) & were buying for a boutique hotel they were designing for - 'whala' that was a bonus for me ...   As it was so hot a lot of dealers didn't stay the full day & I was able to leave a bit earlier as I was driving across to Salisbury.  Maud was happy to pack her things as she was only doing the one day as well.

The drive to Salisbury went smoothly & arrived in time at the B&B where I was staying, to then be able to walk into the town. The owner of the B&B recommended I have dinner at the 'Boathouse' pub which sits right on the river that runs through Salisbury.  It was only a 3 minute walk to the pub. It was delightful & I chose to sit outside where there was only metal fencing between me & the clear running  water of the river. As I ate my tea, ducks paddled down with 10 ducklings, then along came 2 white swans with 3 littlies. It was the most gentle, peaceful time of the day.  Funnily enough there were 3 young women having drinks next to me who struck up a conversation with me & asked me to join them as I was finishing off my dinner. It was a delightful conversation about their young people - as some were off to their first Glastonbury event but one girls daughter was home sewing.  Of course it was lovely to hear about someone so young who loved cutting up fabrics to experiment sewing & her favourite shop was a fabric store right in the heart of Salisbury.

The next morning saw me up for breakfast & so happy to have enough time to walk to the Salisbury Cathederal that I had gone to 18yrs ago with Kathryn.  The walk was lovely as not too many people around, but as I approached the Cathederal the memories came back as to me of its beauty & majesty. I was able to go inside & suddenly felt overwhelmed with the presence of the Lord, as an organist was rehearsing.  It was one of those moments when I felt so far from home.

I almost ran back to my car as I had spent a tad more time than planned & needed to be on my way to some planned time with an Artist in residence (Patricia Samanta) at the Salisbury Spinal Unit. I had seen Patricia's work in a magazine I sometimes get & emailed her about her work. Needless to say it went from there. I was meeting her at her home for a one on one painting lesson. Patricia paints on linen canvas.  I found her home which is in a little village just outside of Salisbury. We spent some quality time together &  I learnt a lot. Can't wait to have some time at home to experiment.

Now on the homeward run back to Val's. I have 1 day to reorganise for the next big Fair.

Sunday Visit to My Special Friends From Perth

Moira Schneider

Imo & Bill have come to visit family & friends, primarily to celebrate  Imo's Mum's 90th Birthday. Also a big reunion for Bill's family in Cornwall.   I headed off to be in time to share together, have lunch & a have a walk with Imo around the village that she grew up in. It was a special time together, as when Imo talks of the village she grew up in,  I have a picture as she shares.  It just so happened that there was a children's party in the little school that Imo went to & we were able to walk through it.  Funny when we go back to places, how small they seem. compared to what we carry in our memories. From there we walked to the dear little church. It was again special as this was where Imo went as a young girl, & where she & Bill were married. Then later her Dad was buried in the cemetery very close to the church entrance. We walked around the grounds & found the old Rectory which is in the process of being restored - probably as apartments.

A lovely time came to an end with photos & goodbyes & then I was on the road again.
